His return
He found her in the chapel after the horns had gone quiet.
For one terrible moment, she only stared at him, as if fear had taught her not to trust the sight of him standing whole in the doorway. Then his armor rang softly beneath her hands, and she was against him, breath trembling, the child between them shifting as though it knew its father had come home. He bent over her, too tired to speak and too grateful to try, and rested his cheek against her.
"I told you I would return," he whispered.
"You are late," she said, but her voice broke on the words.
Outside, men were still counting the dead. Inside, he held his wife and unborn child as if the whole kingdom had narrowed to the space beneath his hands.
