The Plague Doctor's Daughter
The plague doctor moved with grim precision, his beaked mask and black robes casting a long shadow as he made his way through the silent, lifeless streets to collect the latest victims. Every motion was deliberate, every breath steeped in duty.
Behind him whirred his daughter on a clanking, steam-powered segway of her own invention, brass gears clicking with each turn. Her tiny beak mask was slightly askew, and her laughter rang out like birdsong in the fog. As they moved from door to door, she sang soft hymns to the dead, her clear voice weaving through the air like a blessing.
Though she followed him into death’s domain, she did so with light in her heart and soot on her cheeks, determined to bring joy to the work of mourning.
