Her familiar—her loyal raven, ink-feathered and sharp-eyed—had been gone too long, sent to spy on those who dared trespass near her crypt. A whisper of worry, uncharacteristic and unwanted, curled in her chest like smoke. "Return to me," she murmured, voice velvet and venom, "before the night turns faithless."
